Spring Renovations - 7 Basic Steps

Overview

With spring around the corner, homeowners are starting to dream their renovation dreams and contractors

are eager to get bookings into their calendars. It sounds like a perfect meeting of the minds!

But homeowners eager to renovate have to be careful not to get too carried away too fast. Before you select a contractor, it’s good to go back to basics and do your due diligence.

1 Prepare a realistic budget. Renovations are not cheap. A basic bathroom renovation often starts at $15,000.

A quality renovation may cost a bit more but it will be money well spent.

2 Consider hiring a designer. A designer is worth every penny by helping to ensure that your renovation represents

what you really want. Contractors often have designers on staff.

3 Pick a reputable company. If a contractor’s only connection to you is a cell phone number, then maybe you
should give him a pass. Look for a company that’s been around for a while, with a real address and proper

business cards.

4 Ask for references. A reputable contractor is proud of the work he did last week, last month and last year.

Be sure to give his references a call.

5 Get permits. Your home is likely your largest investment, so protect it at all costs and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing a job was done properly – and legally.

6 Get it in writing. Every single aspect of your project should be detailed, fully explained to you and presented in a
contract, to which both parties agree.

7 Ask about a warranty. A company with longevity and a good reputation should be happy to provide one.

It’s not always easy to make the right decisions, but if you go through these steps up front, your next renovation
will be a dream, not a nightmare.
